Author Update March 2019

Where am I? What year is it? What is social media?

Those are the questions I’ve been asking myself ever since waking from hibernation.

Instead of sleeping off an autumn’s worth of berries and fish gorging, I was hunkering down to finish the Bloodstone Dagger Part 2 – Queen of the Skour.

It was a wild ride, I tell you. A few news updates ago, I informed you all that title was going to be a tad late due to having to make it a second book in a trilogy rather than the final book in a duology.

I took nearly an extra year to write a new final half, rejig character motivations, play Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, write out characters that were better suited for future books, and fall into a mild depression about how much my book sucks. But now, I’m in the clear and far more optimistic about this new draft, officially in the editor’s hands.

I can finally catch up on some reading… and of course… all the promotional stuff I’ve missed out on during my hibernation.

One of those promotions being the softcover release of the Eye of Verishten back in February. Yeah… really dropped the ball on that one.

This special edition softcover is aimed at a more romance readership. See this sexy new cover?

BearHill Publishing did a little exposé on the project that you can read about here

So, go to my sale page and get a personalized copy if you order directly from BearHill’s website. It will make a perfect gift for that special someone who likes steamy scenes in their books but also wants a bad-ass fantasy story with political intrigue to go along with it.

What’s next? Coming April 2019, The Bloodstone Dagger Part 1 – The Immortal Serpent will get a bit of a makeover for the hardcover release. Then, I will be scheduling more book signings, this time at Chapters.

And the final order of business is to get cracking on Bloodstone Dagger Part 3. I cannot afford to lose this momentum.  I need to finish the outline so that if I have to make some last-minute changes before Part 2’s release, I can. I also have to send off a short story for a sci-fi anthology in the works. More details on that little project to follow closer to the release date whenever that is.

Thank you all for your patience.

Pop Up Shop

This Black Friday long weekend (November 24-25), I’m setting up shop with other artists, crafters, and authors in downtown Red Deer. I’ll be selling the new hardcovers and previous edition softcovers of the award winning fantasy novel, The Eye of Verishten. Great gift idea for book lovers who enjoy fantasy adventure and/or fantasy romance.

Unfortunately, I’m all out of Immortal Serpent as it too is going to undergo an overhaul in preparation for its hardcover release this Spring. At that time, I plan to go hardcore in promotion for the Bloodstone Dagger series before the release of Book 2 this Fall. For those that can’t wait until then, it’s still available in online stores.

Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo 2018

Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo is this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (September 21-23rd). Come find me at Booth AA306 and get your hardcover copy of The Eye of Verishten and take a gander at a special display item. I’ll give you a hint; it starts with ‘dio’ and ends in ‘ama.’ Can’t wait to show it to you, Edmonton!

Bloodstone Dagger Book 2 Update

As we find ourselves well into convention season, some of you may have noticed that there has been no news on The Bloodstone Dagger Book 2. I figured it was about time to provide an update on the status of the Immortal Serpent’s continuation.

Simply put, it is not going to be the final book in this series anymore!

That’s right. This Duology has become a Trilogy. Sorry to those who purchased Book 1 with the word Duology on the cover, but hey, look at it this way. There are only around 80 in existence, so they can be worth a lot more someday… right…?

When I set out to write BD, it was only supposed to be a single standalone like EOV, but I realized during the initial outlining process that it had to be broken up into at least two parts. I thought a duology would be a unique selling point because there’s hardly any of those around. It’s so uncommon that some word processers don’t even recognize ‘duology’ as a real word. Now I know why. It’s extremely difficult to create a well fleshed-out fantasy split into two parts. Typical stories have a three act structure and that goes for series’ as well.

Anyway, now that I know I still have one more book to write after this one, a giant weight has been lifted. I have more time to properly develop Jeth and Vidya’s continuing arcs as well as further develop a large cast of characters, old and new, without rushing to the end. Ultimately, this will result in me telling the story I really want to tell, and you having a better reading experience overall.

So when can you all expect Book 2 to come out?

Well, changing a story originally planned as a duology into a trilogy means huge structural changes that aren’t going to get fixed in the few months required to publish this year. What happens when the epic climax you planned for the end of a series gets deferred to the next book? You’re left with literally no climactic event for the middle book with everything written in the first two acts leading up to an ending that will no longer happen. In other words, I basically have to rewrite the whole thing from the beginning. Not from scratch, mind you, but it will add so much extra time that rushing it out for 2018 will only make things worse. I may as well just write a 300,000-word tome with the story I originally planned. But, I don’t think any of us want that.

Therefore, Book 2 of the BD Duology… I mean Trilogy (gah!) is now planned to debut in Winter of 2019.

Don’t worry, dear readers… I’m not George R. R. Martining you! I would never do that. He has a life outside of writing. I, evidently, do not.
